Help BIRD as a Group or Association

Organising your own fundraising activity, whether large or small, is a wonderful and fun way to support our work.

Below, we've listed some useful tips to help you organise a fundraising activity and to make it fun:

Fundraising tips

Set up a fundraising group.

Decide on a suitable date far enough in advance for when you'd like to hold an event. The weekend may be easier for everyone to attend, unless you plan to hold your activity during work or school hours.

Decide on a suitable venue. You may wish to consider your workplace, school, local halls, community centres and sport centres. You will need to contact the owners of these venues and get their permission in plenty of time as some venues book up quickly.

Set yourself a fundraising target. A good rule of thumb is to set this around three times as much as you're likely to spend.

Do what you enjoy best i.e. have a coffee morning, team quiz night, fashion show, cake stalls, craft stalls etc

Write a checklist of all the things that you'll need such as costumes, equipment, refreshments etc.

Delegate tasks. Ask what skills people have, then try to people tasks they'll really enjoy.

Try to keep costs low, for example, ask local businesses if they will donate prizes or cover certain costs such as printing or supplying merchandise etc.

If you are under 18, please check whether your parents or guardians are happy for you to take part in a fundraising event.

Advertise your activity. Invite everyone you know. Tell everyone in your school / workplace / street / social club / gym etc, for example by putting notices in your staff or social group newsletter.

Fundraising

Contact local newspapers, radio and TV stations to tell them about the event. You may even try to get a local celebrity to come along to your event, which could help with its promotion.

Ask your sponsors to Gift Aid their donations, this means BIRD gets an extra £28 for every £100 you raise, from the taxman. As long as your sponsors tell us their home address, we can claim this extra money from the Government.

Ask your employer if they operate a matched-giving scheme, if they do, they may be able to double the amount you raise.

Keep the details of everyone who has supported you and remember to thank them.

Please tell us about your fundraising activity. It is always great to hear what activities are being planned and we can always offer further advice when needed.

Remember, every penny really does count. We appreciate a £20 donation just as much as one for £200 – It all goes to help much needed work at the Centre.
